Play Online Poker
Before you sit down to play, understanding the rules and strategies of poker will go a long way in increasing your
chances of winning. Naturally, some of the game is based on sheer luck of the draw but knowing the ins and outs of the
game will certainly increase your odds of winning. There are several card games that fall under the general category of
poker such as Texan Hold ‘Em, Seven Card Stud, and Omaha High. Although each of these games have their own set of rules,
they will all have some similarities and knowing how the play the standard game of poker will help you in all versions of
the game.
All players will be dealt a hand (cards) and, depending on which version you are using, the cards will either be all
down or some up and some down. Your objective is to win money from the other players at the table by placing a bet on your
hand being better than theirs. The betting begins with the initial cards dealt and continues on as players receive different
cards as the dealer goes around the table. How much you bet is dependant upon the strength of your hand as you go along.
If, at any time, you feel your hand isn’t good enough to bet on you can simply fold your cards, meaning you quit
that round. You may not retrieve the money you have already bet. The winner is the last person left after everyone folds.
All poker hands have a ranking and understanding these rankings in crucial to understanding the game. The rankings
are as follows, highest to lowest: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind,
two pair, one pair, and high card. Poker is played using a standard deck of 52 cards with the
joker removed. Aces are usually the high card. To begin, the game moves clockwise around the table and each player must
wait their turn to place a bet or receive cards. Players take turns being the dealer and that is also down in a clockwise
fashion. When it is your turn, you have several options available to you. You may fold, check, bet, call, or raise the existing
bet. Your decision will be based on several things. First, you may have a terrific hand and therefore would like to stay
in and raise the bet. You may have nothing and choose not to continue. You may have an all right hand and suspect that
other players have worse ones, so you just see the original bet. Any player who doesn’t fold will receive additional
cards during their turn if they want them.
Although it seems like the best hand would always win, it doesn’t. There is another option available to you and
that is bluffing. By placing bets and staying in the game, you can fool the other players into believing you have a better
hand than you do. This is where the expression “poker face” comes from. The more believable you look, the
harder it is for the other players to read you keeping the game exciting and unpredictable.
